Some old timers say it has gone to pot. The traffic density frustrates them. But from my own experience and what I can learn on the internet, you can make mostly unobstructed passes if you do the Dragon midweek. Add early or late in the day, and outside "the season," and you can almost have the road to yourself. (Respect The Double Yellow anyway. It takes only one oncoming sportbike, going like the hammers of hell, to ruin both your days, if you're in his lane.)
As for crowded, and when the Dragon got that way, check out these pictures I found on the 'net. Still got your bellbottom jeans? Your Burt Reynolds haircut? Your open-face helmet? For the Fiddy duels, it looks like a dirt bike would have been the weapon of choice. The Exxon had a motel and a restaurant. Looks like the Dragon was "discovered" before the early 1990's.
Crossroads of Time indeed!

Guy that owned it was great ! He tried to keep his drinking a secret from his wife. When the newer owners took over and started pulling drywall down beer cans came spilling out of the walls and I mean every square inch of wall space had cans in it, thousands of them.
Plenty of photos to prove it ! And the funniest of all it was a dry county and pretty much was till a short time ago cept for Tapoco that had it grandfathered in.
Great photos BTW
How long have you been going up to the Dragon? Sounds like you're steeped in the lore.
As for the pix, its amazing what you can find on the internet. That is a value-neutral statement. :-)
